About the session

Women are already building Africa’s water businesses

Across Africa, women carry most of the burden of collecting water, often walking for hours each day. That time could go to learning, earning and building businesses.

Many women are already turning this burden into opportunity. They run water kiosks, purification and delivery services, borehole maintenance and irrigation based farms, often serving communities that public systems do not reach.

Yet women led water enterprises receive a small share of finance. Lenders ask for collateral many women cannot provide, investors overlook small businesses, and funding rarely considers the barriers women face.

This session brings together women water entrepreneurs, investors, policymakers and researchers to explore how gender responsive investment can help these enterprises grow and accelerate progress on SDG 6. Recommendations from the discussion will be shared with the UN Water Conference Secretariat.
